My neighbourhood sometimes has the most wonderful smells.
There is a coffee roaster just on the other side of the S-Bahn tracks, so evenings are filled with the scent of having just woken up on a weekend morning. Dinners by the window or on the balcony feel like breakfasts.
Also close by is the Bahlsen cookie factory. The smell of freshly baked cookies is especially strong when I am running my rounds around Tempelhof. It is both wonderful and torturous.
Loud drums and pot-banging interrupted my work.
Outside, kids, taking over the streets, protesting dog shit.
auf allen Vieren
die Kacke muss weg!
My balcony is in a sad state. I was shocked when I walked out there for the first time (in over half a year) last weekend. Even tough it’s part of my apartment, it feels like a foreign place. An ashtray piled high, dead and brown plants, half-empty Kasten of beer, faded garden decorations. I wish my friends who go out there to smoke would have told me about it, I would have tried to make it a little more hospitable.
And the snow: enough!
Soon I will be able to restore my balcony. I will take care of my lettuce, herbs, strawberries, chilies, drink my sun tea, read in my lounge chair, and in my heart I will forget that this never-ending winter ever existed. (until the next one rolls around)
More snow. Despite myself, I got excited this morning. Hope it sticks around for my 35k hike through the Brandenburg forest tomorrow!
