Hiked around the outskirts of Berlin yesterday - what a joy to see so much green, and all of the trees in bloom.

Suntea, suntea, lalala the sun is shining!

And my balcony is beautiful and full of green!

Loud drums and pot-banging interrupted my work.

Outside, kids, taking over the streets, protesting dog shit.

I totally forgot (conveniently) and just remembered: it does not actually get nice in Berlin until May. There are a bunch of holidays in May, and they all entail spending time outside in the sun, riding around on bikes, and staying up late into the mild evening.  Only one more month to go!

My balcony is in a sad state.  I was shocked when I walked out there for the first time (in over half a year) last weekend.  Even tough it’s part of my apartment, it feels like a foreign place.  An ashtray piled high, dead and brown plants, half-empty Kasten of beer, faded garden decorations.  I wish my friends who go out there to smoke would have told me about it, I would have tried to make it a little more hospitable.

And the snow: enough! 

Soon I will be able to restore my balcony.  I will take care of my lettuce, herbs, strawberries, chilies, drink my sun tea, read in my lounge chair, and in my heart I will forget that this never-ending winter ever existed. (until the next one rolls around)
